Although babies don’t always need much, parents do seem to need a fair amount of bits and pieces to change a nappy. This is why a change bag is so useful. It is easy to know what you need, but you don’t want to have to repack a bag everytime you go out of the front door. Once you have your change bag always keep it supplied and ready to leave.
Baby change bags are sold everywhere and they all seem to be a bit different. Your change bag should have several requirements: a portable, fold away change mat and three seperate sections. It is important to have several sections as you do not want any soiled clothes next to the clean spare outfits, equally important is a section where you can keep dummies, water bottles and other useful bits when you are out.
Your change bag should be easy to clean, preferably with a wipeable interior.

You can buy ones which are specifically designed for your pushchair or you can get ones which you carry and can simply put in the shopping section of your pushchair, finally there are the ones for carrying on your back. The backpack change bag is probably the most useful if you are planning on a hiking or walking trip so one you of you will carry supplies while the other is carrying the carrier, while in town or on your average shopping trip these type of change bag is not really necessary.
Before you buy your change bag think about what you are likely to be putting in it, this will give you an idea of the size you will need. For a newborn it is often a good idea to take two spare outfits, as they cannot be left in damp clothes and it is quite common for to vomit a bit after a feed when they are being burped, so you will need aspare outfit for post feeding and also in case of nappy leaks! You will also need a couple of nappies, nappy sacks and either wipes or cotton wool. If you child doesn’t like having their nappy changed it is a good idea to keep either a spare dummy or some snacks for bribery in the change bag – it is much easier and less stressful for the parent to change a child if the is not already upset!
If you are buying a change bag as a gift it is probably a good idea to check the make of the pushchair which will be used and then to go to a department store or specialist mother and shop to get advice on the most popular brands.
Finally remember that if you want daddy to change the then it may not be a good idea to get a pink or flowered bag – he may feel a little more comfortable with something less conspicuous.
